WEDDING SPEECH NOTES

A father of the bride speech: warm, personal and manageable

A meaningful speech does not need to cover an entire lifetime. Choose a memory that helps the room see the person you are proud of today.

Build around four moments

  1. Welcome the room. Introduce yourself and thank people for being there. Agree any particular acknowledgements with the couple beforehand.
  2. Share a memory. Describe something you remember clearly. Keep the story kind and relevant; your daughter should feel celebrated, not exposed.
  3. Say what you admire now. Connect the memory to a quality you see in her today. Be specific: a small example of generosity means more than a long list of adjectives.
  4. Welcome the partnership and toast. Speak directly to both people. Share a genuine observation about them together, then invite the guests to raise a glass.

Make space for emotion

If you expect to become emotional, mark a pause where you need it. Keep water nearby. A short, honest sentence is often easier to deliver than an elaborate paragraph. You do not need to apologise for taking a moment.

Ask the couple how they want family names, absent guests and sensitive circumstances handled. Do not assume everyone wants a traditional welcome or a particular family story included.

Edit for the room

Read your draft aloud and time it. Remove repeated praise and details that need a long explanation. Write names clearly on your cue cards. The last line should make it obvious that you are proposing a toast, so the room can follow you.

A prompt to get started

Complete these three sentences in your own words: “A moment I always remember is…”; “What that shows about you is…”; “My wish for you both is…”. You can build a personal speech from those answers before worrying about a polished opening.

If you use AI to help shape the draft, check every fact and read it aloud afterwards. Keep the phrases you would naturally say and change the rest.
